Wander the many aisles of this interior designer dream at your own leisure! This trip should also allow you time to treat yourself to some of IKEA’s famous meatballs and lingonberry jam in the café.

So if you've forgotten a few pans, need to learn some clever storage techniques for your student accommodation, or just fancy some of the finest Swedish food in town - join us on our trip to IKEA!

Important Information and Summary of Terms & Conditions

This is a summary of the terms & conditions for Give it a Go trips. Full terms and conditions can be found here: https://www.cardiffstudents.com/activities/give-it-a-go/faq/ Please note that in the case of any discrepancies, the terms & conditions on this page overrule the full terms & conditions.

The times listed on the event are from when the coach will leave the Student Union in the morning, until an approximate arrival back to Cardiff. You will be asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to departure, for boarding, in order to ensure the coach leaves on time. Arrival times back in Cardiff are subject to traffic, weather and road conditions, which are beyond our control, so we cannot guarantee exact time of arrival.
The trips will go ahead regardless of weather conditions, so please do come prepared. This excludes extreme or dangerous weather, where we would of course cancel for your safety. In this event you would be offered the option between a full refund or a rescheduled date (where it is possible to reschedule).
All Give it a Go events are non-refundable, with an exception detailed in the bullet point below. When you sign up we pay your money directly to the coach company and/or the attraction, so are bound by refund rules ourselves. In the very rare case a trip needs to be cancelled by us, you will of course receive a full refund (or opportunity to transfer to another trip if you preferred).
Where a ticket has been purchased over a month before the trip, you can cancel and receive a refund up to (and including) 7 days after your purchase. To get this refund, please email giveitago@cardiff.ac.uk with your name, student number and trip you would like to be refunded.
If you can no longer attend the trip, there may be the opportunity to transfer you tickets to another trip. This will be done on a case by case basis and is not guaranteed. There will be a £5 admin fee to change trips, plus the difference in price if the trip you are transferring to costs more than the original ticket cost. Requests to transfer tickets after 3pm on the last working day before the trip will not granted. For the avoidance of doubt, the last working day is the Friday prior to the trip, unless that Friday is a bank holiday in Wales, in which case it would be the day prior. Transfers must be between trips in the same academic year. To enquire about transferring your ticket, please email giveitago@cardiff.ac.uk with your name, student number, the trip that you’d like transferring from and the trip you’d like to be transferred to and we will try our best to assist.
If you will not be catching the return coach, please let your trip leader know. If you will not be catching the outbound coach, please email giveitago@cardiff.ac.uk no later than Friday at 5pm before the trip. If you do not do this, your seat may be forfeited.
We understand that some students have caring responsibilities. Children, when accompanied by an adult, can attend day trips where appropriate. Please contact Giveitago@cardiff.ac.uk prior to purchasing tickets with the age of your child/children and the trip(s) you wish to attend to check suitability. Children will need their own ticket for the trip, but we will reserve seats for them next to their parent / responsible adult free of charge.
By purchasing a Give It a Go ticket, your details will be added to our Give It a Go participant list. This allows us to contact you about future Give It a Go activities and similar trips. You can opt out of these communications at any time by emailing Giveitago@Cardiff.ac.uk
During the trip, we may take group photos. These may be shared with other participants on the trip and may be used on the Students’ Union social media, website and other channels. By being in group photos, you agree to your image being shared in this way. You will never be forced or expected to join a group photo if you’d prefer not to.

There is no queue access from Park Place or via the Cathays railway bridge.

Enter the lane from Corbett Road and follow the route towards the Centre for Student Life (CFSL). The gates at the entrance to the CFSL tunnel are the official entry point for everyone attending YOLO.

This arrival route operates from the start of the event and throughout the busiest periods of the night. Please use the correct entrance to help us keep everyone moving safely and fairly.

Our queue system has been designed to provide a safer and fairer arrival experience while helping everyone get into the venue as quickly as possible.

🚻 Toilets are available while queueing. Once the queue becomes stationary under our one-out, one-in system, toilets will be opened for customers waiting in line. Simply speak to a member of Security and you'll be able to return to the same place in the queue once you've finished.

Cardiff is often described as "the perfect student city" because it is an exciting capital city whilst still being safe and affordable. Why not spend a few hours with our experienced Give it a Go tour guides exploring the City Centre? We'll show you all the best, interesting and downright quirky sights that Cardiff has to offer.

With a population of 320,000 people, including 70,000 students, there is plenty to see and do in Cardiff. As one of the newest capital cities in Europe, whether you're after culture, sports, shopping or entertainment Cardiff has it all. Also being one of the small capital cities in Europe everything is of course within walking distance of the Student Union.

Did you know that as well as a 75,000 seated stadium, Cardiff has a brand new £675 million shopping mall, over 150 pubs, 70+ restaurants, more than 330 parks and gardens, Europe's largest water front development, its own 11th Century Castle, a National Museum, a huge network of arcade shops, an IKEA, an impressive TV and film industry (*cough* Torchwood, Dr Who, Sherlock), dozens of cinemas and theatres, a huge transport hub and it never rains.

Okay we lied about the rain, but everything else is true!

The tour will take approximately 2 hours.

Cardiff University is one of the UK's leading universities and the largest in Wales. Spread over two campuses, this tour explores the Cathays Park Campus.

Most students will only ever experience of a handful of time-tabled venues, but the two campuses of Cardiff University educate over 30,000 students across a huge site spread over the city. This tour will bring the University alive, showing you the multitude of hidden libraries, cafes, and quiet revision spots you'll be really grateful to know about one day very soon. Knowledge is power!

The tour should take around an hour and a half to work its way back to the Students' Union.

To visit St Fagan’s is to step back and immerse yourself in Wales’s past and feel what it was to live in times gone by. Buildings from across Wales have been re-constructed in the parkland for you to explore. These range from fascinating Iron age roundhouses found in the East of Ynys Môn (Anglesey) to pieces of living history in the form of post offices and pubs of the 20^th Century. Bring your friends, pack a picnic and indulge in everything St Fagans has to offer.

Important Information and Summary of Terms & Conditions

The times listed on the event are from when the coach will leave the Student Union in the morning, until an approximate arrival back to Cardiff. You will be asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to departure, for boarding, in order to ensure the coach leaves on time. Arrival times back in Cardiff are subject to traffic, weather and road conditions, which are beyond our control, so we cannot guarantee exact time of arrival.
The trips will go ahead regardless of weather conditions, so please do come prepared. This excludes extreme or dangerous weather, where we would of course cancel for your safety. In this event you would be offered the option between a full refund or a rescheduled date (where it is possible to reschedule).
All Give it a Go events are non-refundable, with an exception detailed in the bullet point below. When you sign up we pay your money directly to the coach company and/or the attraction, so are bound by refund rules ourselves. In the very rare case a trip needs to be cancelled by us, you will of course receive a full refund (or opportunity to transfer to another trip if you preferred).
Where a ticket has been purchased over a month before the trip, you can cancel and receive a refund up to (and including) 7 days after your purchase. To get this refund, please email giveitago@cardiff.ac.uk with your name, student number and trip you would like to be refunded.
If you can no longer attend the trip, there may be the opportunity to transfer you tickets to another trip. This will be done on a case by case basis and is not guaranteed. Nestled on the edges of the Brecon beacons is a hidden woodland valley, with cascading, fairytale falls. Following the trail of the river Neath, as it cuts its way through the landscape, we’ll guide you on a ramble to the very best of the waterfalls. We’ll stop at each fall for a photo stop/your Instagram shoot! The walk is about 3 miles each way, including a picnic lunch stop and several stops at the waterfalls themselves. Surely this is the most beautiful way to get your 10,000 steps in!

The highest point in South Wales, Pen y Fan (pronounced Pen uh Van) is a beautiful four mile hike with stunning views as far as the Bristol channel, the Gower Peninsular and the Cambrian mountains. 250,000 people make this climb each year, so you’d be missing out to leave Wales without doing it.

The Bannau Brycheiniog (known in English as the Brecon Beacons), where Pen y Fan is situated, has been a National Park for over 60 years. The park is full of mountains and valleys and much is it is grazed by ponies and mountain sheep, which help to make the vast, rural mountain range what it is today.

The walk is about four miles in total, 2 miles and up and 2 miles back time with plenty of time at the summit for lunch and photo opportunities! The route we will take is the most relaxed way to the summit and is considered a manageable walk. And with 98% of the 1,031 trip advisor reviews describing this walk as ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’, it’s fair to say it’s worth the hike!

Though this quote is about the magical forest of Arden, we like to think that Shakespeare would have said the same about his hometown, because we certainly would!

The lively main street is surrounded by timber-frame buildings and taverns – you can even imagine how Shakespeare would recognise some of his old surroundings today. Visit his birthplace to hear tales of family life and get up close to objects from the Trust’s world class collections. Or perhaps take a 30-minute walk from the centre and you’ll find yourself at Anne Hathaway’s (his wife’s) delightful cottage, positioned in traditional gardens and orchards, where 13 generations of the same family lived!

But Shakespeare isn’t all Stratford-Upon-Avon has going for it. Situated on the River Avon, river boats will cruise you up the river to take in the English countryside and spot the riverside wildlife. And if you fancy something more exotic, the UK’s largest butterfly farm has got you covered. With hundreds of butterflies living in a waterfall and tropical plant filled paradise, this is a beautiful escape and an even better photo opportunity.

Join us during Freshers’ 2026 and indulge yourself in the Welsh culture with some Welsh Cake making, which Give it a Go is running in collaboration with Baking Society.

For any of you that are new to Wales this is a must try and a delicious treat. For any of our Welsh students, this is a chance to learn how to make a classic, or show everyone how it’s done!

Come along and spend some time cooking (and eating!). All ingredients will be provided.

Discover art, natural history and geology in Cardiff's beautiful National Museum. With a busy programme of exhibitions and events, they have something to amaze everyone, whatever your interest!

Admission to the museum is free so no need to worry about bringing any loose change. Just bring yourself and your thirst for knowledge!

The Jurassic Coast is a stunning landscape and world heritage site, stretching for nearly 100 miles along England’s Southern Coast. It’s named after the geological significance of the rocks and fossils unearthed there. But it’s more than just a haven for geographers. Visit the picturesque village of Lulworth, almost unchanged for hundreds of years, which invokes sentiments of times gone by. The iconic archway of Durdle Door stretches out to sea and is the most recognisable part of this beautiful coastline. You can reach this by taking a gentle clifftop ramble, just over a mile from Lulworth village. Feeling hungry? There’s beachside cafes to take in the scenery as you lunch, or relax in comfort at a traditional inn.

Later, we’ll head to the Village of Corfe Castle, where the the dramatic ruins of Corfe Castle dominate the sleepy Purbeck hills. With over 1,000 years of history, the castle has seen its fair share of history, from the Anglo Saxons, the Norman’s in 1066, through to being a private house in Elizabethan times and now being a popular attraction and even a filming location. From the top of the castle you look down on the idyllic village below, with its beautiful stone houses and the church of St Edward in its centre.

Shrouded in mystery, Stonehenge is one of the UK’s most recognisable and fascinating icons. We’ll never know for certain why – or how - our ancestors brought these Welsh Stones to the beautiful rolling countryside in rural Wiltshire. You’ll also get to visit the idyllic cathedral city of Salisbury, home to the tallest spire in the UK.

It is believed that Stonehenge is 5,000 years old – erected over 2000 years before Christ. Some historians have suggested that it served as an ancient calendar; the sun rises over the centre of the circle at summer solstice, the longest day of the year. Others have suggested that it was an ancient heeling site or a temple and place of worship. Come and make your mind up for yourself!

The remainder of the day is spent exploring the lovely city of Salisbury. The Cathedral is a landmark on the horizon from the surrounding countryside and it is every bit spectacular inside as you’d expect. Additionally, it is home to the Magna Carta, an 803-year-old symbol of justice, which still impacts our lives today. Outside of the cathedral, you can take a stroll through the city gate and perhaps treat yourselves in one of the independent tea shops.

Somerset’s scenic landscapes are home to a mix of historic wonders and romantic legends, going back to Camelot and beyond. Tucked into the southwest corner of England are two of the best places to contemplate the country's mythic past: Glastonbury and Wells.

Glastonbury was a religious site as far back as the Bronze Age — about 1500 B.C. It's considered the birthplace of Christianity in England, and the legendary burial site of King Arthur. Today, Glastonbury is popular with those on their own spiritual quest, and synonymous with its summer music and arts festival — one of the largest in the world. Part of the fun of a visit here is just being in a town where every other shop has a New Age focus, and where "alternative" is the norm.

As well as spending time in the town, you’ll have the opportunity to climb Glastonbury Tor, a gentle yet commanding hill rising out of the Somerset levels. From the top are beautiful views all over the South West, revealing the vast plains below – on a good day you can even see over the Bristol channel over the Black mountains of Wales.

In contrast to Glastonbury's abbey ruins, the city of Wells is dominated by its glorious, still-intact Gothic cathedral. With a population just under 12,000, Wells is often considered the smallest "city" in England, only missing out on the official title due to a technicality. Next to the cathedral is the charming Vicars Close, the oldest in-tact residential street in Europe, with other 700 years of history.

Rhossili Bay is the premier beach destination of the Gower peninsular, the UK's first designated area of outstanding natural beauty - and it's not hard to see why. The beach itself has been held as the 3rd best beach in Europe and 9th best in the world! Quite an accolade when you think that the competition includes Australia, Bermuda and Brazil.

You will find 3 miles of sandy shore, encompassing one of Gower’s most famous landmarks, Worms Head. Watersports, in particular surfing, benefit from the Atlantic swell, whilst sand-castle builders benefit from the fine golden sand. The views are incomparable and are best enjoyed from one of the many walking routes, which feature the beach, Worm’s Head and the cliffs, you may even see some basking seals or dolphins playing in the surf.

Of all the castles in Wales, Cardiff Castle is one of the most amazing and richly complex sites and it's on your doorstep! Meet new people and have fun as Give it a Go takes you there.

The ticket to this event is free, but you will need to pay entry directly to the castle if you do not already have a Castle Key.
For students currently without a Castle Key, you must bring your student card or proof of living in Cardiff with you. You can then purchase admission to this world-class heritage attraction for 3 years - with a one off fee of just £8
Without a student card or proof of Cardiff residency, standard one-off admission prices are £16.50 for an adult.

This will be a relaxed event and chance to get to know others – the group will be accompanied by a team member but they’re not an expert on the castle! The end time is approximate; you can stay for as long or as little as you like.

Step into postcard-perfect England as we explore three of the most characterful corners of the South Cotswolds and the surrounding area.

Often described as one of the prettiest villages in England, Castle Combe is a place seemingly untouched by time. Stone cottages line the main street, a medieval market cross stands at its heart, and the Bybrook River gently winds through the village. With no modern development in sight, it’s easy to see why Castle Combe has featured in films and TV dramas for decades.

Just a short drive away is Lacock, a beautifully preserved village owned largely by the National Trust. Its half-timbered houses, historic abbey and traditional streets make it instantly recognisable – you may spot filming locations from Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and Pride & Prejudice. Take time to wander the cloisters, browse independent shops or enjoy a relaxed lunch in one of the village pubs.

We’ll then visit Bradford-on-Avon, a charming market town set along the River Avon. Here you can stroll across the historic Town Bridge, explore canalside paths, or seek out the remarkable Saxon Church of St Laurence, one of the oldest buildings of its kind in England. The town offers a gentle mix of history, cafés and scenic walks.

Join us during Freshers’ 2026 and indulge yourself in the Welsh culture with some Welsh Cake making, which Give it a Go is running in collaboration with Baking Society.

For any of you that are new to Wales this is a must try and a delicious treat. For any of our Welsh students, this is a chance to learn how to make a classic, or show everyone how it’s done!

Come along and spend some time cooking (and eating!). All ingredients will be provided.

Tenby is one of the most famous towns in South Wales and for a reason! Escape city life and breathe in the fresh sea air in this charming coastal town. The colourful houses on the seafront radiate a vintage opulence, whilst the clear waters will whisk you straight to the Mediterranean. Yet, at its heart, this is a classic British resort town that’s withstood the test of time. Alongside the ice cream kiosks and fudge parlours, you’ll find a traditional arcade and grand church, which has been serving the people of Tenby since the 1200s.

Over 2,500 acres of gardens wind their way around a glorious silver lake, which is overshadowed by alluring rhododendrons and native species standing side by side. Lakeside you’ll find a secret grotto, at one with the landscape, offering postcard-like views over the estate. It is here, in the grounds of Stourhead, that Mr Darcey (Matthew Macfadyen) proposed to Elizabeth Bennet (Keira Knightley) in the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Stourhead House will be shut, though can be viewed from the outside.

Stourhead is one of the National Trust’s most iconic estates and is not to be missed.

Bath is the perfect city to host Christmas markets. This Is quintessential England, a city known for its Roman baths and Natural hot springs, which have been attracting high society for centuries.

This city is brought to life by the award-winning prestigious Christmas markets, which have been described by judges as “internationally attractive, setting standards for other Christmas markets”.

And it is not hard to see why! With over 150 rustic chalets, you’re bound to find that artisan gift for a special someone. From homemade jewellery, classy homeware and charming Christmas decorations the market brings together a classy and varied selection of local sellers.

But the experience is much more than that. The air is filled with the scent of Christmas from the street food vendors; treat yourself to some traditional British Christmas fayre as you explore – a warm mince pie washed down with a sweet, mulled wine is a must. And all around is the hustle and bustle of a busy market is the sound of the season – brass bands, choirs and children all sing your favourite carols, making this is enchanted Christmas you’ve been dreaming of.

Discover the heart of the Cotswolds as we explore three of its most well-known characterful towns and villages. This journey through the North Cotswolds is filled with historic market squares, riverside walks and classic English scenery built from warm, honey-coloured stone.

We begin in Stow-on-the-Wold, one of the highest towns in the Cotswolds and a place with a long history as an important market town. Its broad marketplace, once used for sheep fairs, is now lined with independent shops, antique centres and traditional inns. Just beyond the square, you’ll find winding streets and quiet corners that reveal the town’s medieval past.

Next, we visit Bourton-on-the-Water, often nicknamed the “Venice of the Cotswolds.” The River Windrush flows gently through the village, crossed by a series of low stone bridges that give Bourton its instantly recognisable charm. Take time to wander along the riverbanks, explore the small museums and shops, or simply enjoy the atmosphere of one of the most photographed villages in England.

Our final stop is Burford, a historic town dramatically set at the bottom of a long sloping high street. From the top, the view opens out across the Windrush valley. At the bottom of the hill sits the impressive Church of St John the Baptist, while the high street itself is lined with centuries-old buildings, tearooms and traditional shops.

You will be asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to departure, for boarding, in order to ensure the coach leaves on time. The royal city of Windsor: the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II and you can look around!

Situated on the banks of the river Thames, Windsor Castle was originally build in the 11^th Century and it is still in use to this day, overlooking this regal town. You can visit the grand St George’s Chapel, used for significant occasions, such as the wedding of Harry and Meghan; the majestic state rooms garnished in vivid colours, and walk the ceremonial route, used for official visits by heads of state.

You could also take a boat trip along the Thames and soak in the view of the Castle and spot Eton, arguably the most famous school in the world.

Alongside this, Windsor known for its elegant buildings, great high street and shopping arcade in the train station!

We strongly suggest booking Windsor Castle tickets in advance if you wish to visit.

The dates of the trip are 31^st March 2027, meeting at ABACWS (next to Cardiff Students’ Union) at 6:45am for a 7am departure. We will return to Cardiff by approximately 7:30pm on 2^nd April 2027

The price of £149 is an early bird price. This will increase to £169 in February 2027 (exact date TBC).

From flowing waterfalls and hidden villages, to Victorian seaside resorts and medieval castles, North Wales and Eryri/Snowdonia is a unique corner of the United Kingdom. The region is a stronghold of Welsh culture, with magnificent but varied landscapes, and you’ll likely to hear Cymraeg (the Welsh language) being spoken. You can expect walled towns, wild goats, spectacular views and castles – but more on these below!

The Hotel

You will stay in a three person room at the Llandudno Travelodge, which is centrally located in the town. It is a 5 minute walk to the pier and the beach, two highlights of Llandudno. There are a variety of restaurants and pubs located around the hotel and a small supermarket is just a two minute walk away.

We will try to accommodate requests for being in same sex rooms or rooms with friends as best we can but this cannot be guaranteed.

The Itinerary

Day 1

Departing from the SU, you’ll head towards Eryri/Snowdonia, with a breakfast stop along the way with facilities.

Our first stop in Eryri/Snowdonia will be at Swallow falls, in the heart of North Wales. It is a charming waterfall set against beech and birch trees. Entry fee to the falls is included. From here we’ll make our way to Betws-y-Coed, a small and traditional Welsh village, where you can have lunch by the quaint Pont-y-Pair bridge.

Once we depart, we’ll be heading to the Victorian resort town of Llandudno, on the North Wales coast. There will be time to settle into your room and you’ll then have the option of either free time or to walk with the group to the pier, which is only five minutes away from the hotel. You’ll be free to have dinner of your choosing – perhaps a classic fish and chip supper on the beach.

In the evening, we will be doing an optional walk up the Great Orm, the hill overlooking the town. You’ll see the wild Kashmiri goats roam free along this hillside, though they keep their distance from people! Starting on the aesthetic Marine drive, we’ll then head up the Orm which 360 degree views of the bay and the Coastline. If we’re lucky, there will be a beautiful sunset to match!

Day 2

In the morning, visit Conwy, a walled town, marked by a grand castle, a UNESCO world heritage site. The town is also home to Plas Mawr, the finest Elizabethan house in the UK. Contrastingly, it is also home to one of Wales’s most quirky attractions, the smallest house in the UK. All of these are open to the public. Boats also travel along the river, either out to sea or inland back towards Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon for a unique way of sightseeing in the area.

For the afternoon, head to Llanberis, the village right at the base of Yr Wyddfa/Mount Snowdon. You can join us on an optional trip up the Mountain Railway for an easy way to visit Yr Wyddfa/Mount Snowdon! The train will go to Clogwyn station, approximately three-quarters of the way up. From here, enjoy magnificent views over the valley below and over Snowdonia/ Eryri national park. Note that the train does not reach the summit in April due to ice & snow.

We aim to save you money by getting a group discount. Tickets can be bought directly from us, which will be cheaper than purchasing from the railway.

Please note that the railway has yet to confirm exact details of their 2027 schedule. Our itinerary may be changed accordingly. There will be a deadline (currently TBC) to purchase railway tickets – they cannot be purchased on the day of the trip, as final numbers need confirming with the railway in advance.

If you don’t wish join the group on the train, there are a number of options. You could visit the National Slate museum, to explore the impact that slate has had on the lives of local residents and the landscape, or explore the national park on a walk. Note that there would not be enough time to climb to the peak of Yr Wyddfa/Mount Snowdon, as this is a 14.4km walk up the highest mountain in Cymru/Wales.

Please note that the National Slate Museum has undertaken a large re-development project over the last few years. They are due to re-open in 2026 or 2027, depending on the source of the information. This means that they may not be open on the date of the trip.

Leaving Llanberis, the coach will make the ride back to the hotel in Llandudno, where you’ll have a free evening. After a dinner of your own choosing, why not take an evening stroll along the promenade, perhaps heading to West shore beach for views to Anglesey/Ynys Môn.

Day 3

Leaving Llandudno behind, there will be a short photo opportunity at Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, a town famous for having the longest place name in Europe.

Later, we’ll visit Penrhyn Castle, which is not your traditional castle! It was built in the 19^th Century, in the style of a Norman castle but for use as a manor house. Inside, it is decorated lavishly with exquisite furniture and one of the largest art collections in Wales. However, the castle has a dark side; the family who owned the castle in its prime gained a huge deal of wealth from the slave trade in the West Indies, a past which is soberingly acknowledged.

The castle is now owned by the National Trust, a conservation charity. No money from our booking is going to the descendants of slave owners.

After this, enjoy a scenic journey back to Cardiff, with a comfort break en-route. The coach is expected to arrive back in Cardiff at approximately 7:30pm.

Is there anything else that I need to know?

You do not need a passport or visa for this trip.

Should you wish to buy travel insurance, which we would recommend, you will need to arrange this yourself.

Closer to the trip, you will be sent a link to a typeform, which asks who you want to share a room with, emergency contact details etc. Please fill this out as soon as possible so that we have all the information we need. This should not take more than about 5 minutes.

We’d expect the walk from the accommodation to the Great Orm to take approximately 2.5 hours from start to finish. This includes a reasonable break at the top for photos and a short rest. The route is about 4 miles in total and includes uphill and downhill segments, including one very steep section. The walk is manageable for people with reasonable levels of fitness. If you want to discuss if it is suitable for you, please email giveitago@cardiff.ac.uk or speak to your trip leader on the trip. The significant uphill section can be avoided easily & the views are still stunning – contact us on the above email for details to find out more. Though no specific clothing (or equipment) is needed, we suggest wearing sturdy trainers or walking shoes and dressing appropriately for the weather. Dependant on weather, we may move this to the second night if it would be a better experience. If both evenings have extremely poor weather, the walk may be moved to a morning or cancelled completely. There would be no refunded offered for this.

If you are joining us on the mountain railway, it will be a two hour scenic round trip, with a stop at Clogwyn station, which is about ¾ of the way up Snowdon. It is not possible to reach the submit via train at this point in the year, due to ice and/or snow. There are no toilets or facilities during the trip.

Each room will initially be given one key card but reception will provide more on request

You can buy a ticket online or in person from the finance office. The finance office is located on the 3^rd floor of the Student Union and is open weekdays 10am – 4pm. From the stairwell turn left, past the Sabb bowl (large fishbowl-like office) and left again. The finance office is at the end of the corridor, clearly marked by an orange sign. The Give it a Go desk is located along the corridor, marked by a green sign, so do speak to us if you have any questions!

If you can no longer attend, you may be able to get your money back if you can either find a replacement or if we have someone willing to go from a waiting list. Terms to this are below:

There will be £10 admin fee for the person unable to attend.
The person replacing you may have to be the same sex, depending on rooming requirements at the time. Please check with giveitago@cardiff.ac.uk if this will apply at the time you are looking at transferring a ticket.
Transfers need to go through Give it a Go. Only people with named tickets will be allowed on the trip.
The earlier you contact us, the more likely a ticket transfer is. However, even at last minute, please still contact us and we shall try our best to assist.
Ticket transfers are never guaranteed

If the trip cannot go ahead due to a force-majeure (such as a lockdown or natural disaster) you would be provided with a full refund. We would also try and reschedule, so it may be possible for you to simply transfer your ticket to the new date instead.

In the event of a force-majeure where the trip can go ahead but we need to make changes, alternative arrangements of an equivalent or higher standard to the initial booking may be made.

The trip is subject to minimum numbers. If it does not meet minimum requirements, the trip may be unable to go ahead. In this case a full refund would be provided.

Food is not included.

Wi-Fi is not included but may be purchased at an additional cost from the Travelodge

Entry is included where stated. Should you with to enter other attractions, this would be at your own expense.

Please be on time for the coach. If you are late and the coach leaves without you, we are not responsible for your transportation and you will not receive a refund. This applies each time we use the coach. If you do not wish to take the coach for any journey, please let the trip leader know. You will need to bring your Cardiff student card and carry it to attractions, as some may need proof of your student status. If you do not carry your card with you and there is an additional charge, you will be responsible for the price difference.

The itinerary and estimated timings may be subject to change due to circumstances beyond our control (including but not limited to weather and traffic conditions).

Scotland - the land of tartan, highland games and deep fried mars bars - is a must visit, and Edinburgh is a jewel in the crown. Despite being a capital city, Edinburgh is compact and easy to explore with plenty of adventures awaiting! Highlights include Edinburgh Castle, one of the oldest fortified sites in Europe; Arthur’s Seat, an extinct volcano in the heart of the city, offering spectacular views over the landscape, and the Royal Mile, known for its cobbled streets around the charming old town.

The Hostel

You will stay in a dormitory room in the Edinburgh Central Youth Hostel, a five-star rated hostel* in the centre of the city. We will try to accommodate requests for being in same sex rooms or rooms with friends as best we can but this cannot be guaranteed.

Please note that on the morning of arrival, you will be dropped off at the hostel to store luggage but check in will be late afternoon/early evening. Likewise, on the final day, you can store luggage at the hostel but will not have access to your room after check-out.

*Visit Scotland, 2024/25.

Dates & Times

The dates of the trip are 19^th December 2026 (meeting at 00:30am at ABACWS to load luggage for a 1am departure) and leaving Edinburgh on 21^st December at 5pm, meaning you have three days in the city. You can expect to arrive back in Cardiff on 22^nd December in the early hours.

Day Excursion

On 20^th December, we will have an optional day excursion to St Andrew’s and Dunnottar Castle, for an additional cost.

Dunnottar Castle is a dramatic Castle on a sharp cliff edge, looking out to the North Sea. It has been used as a filming location for Hamlet with Mel Gibson and inspired Pixar’s brave.

St Andrew’s is home to the oldest University in Scotland, dating from the 15^th Century. As well as the University, where Prince William met Kate Middleton, St Andrew’s is home to some lovely beaches, a ruined Cathedral, the traditional pier and Jannettas “world famous” gelateria, established in 1908.

Scotland is a beautiful country but it is not small. There will be travelling involved to get to these destinations.

To purchase this day excursion, you will need to have the Edinburgh Trip ticket and then purchase the 'Day Excursion Add On' ticket.

If you do not wish to attend this optional excursion, you will have free time in Edinburgh instead

There’s plenty to do in Edinburgh. Here’s a few highlights:

Edinburgh Castle – Standing high on Castle rock and overlooking the city, this has been a castle since at least the 12^th Centre and possibly as far back as the Iron age. Since then it has been a key site in the battles between England and Scotland. Now there is plenty to see, from defences to towers military prisons and wonderful viewpoints over the city below.
Royal Mile – The Royal mile is the heart of Edinburgh’s old town and links the Castle and the Palace of Holyrood House. It is a must visit area with beautiful architecture and cobbled streets, not to mention plenty of side streets and arcades to explore.
Christmas Markets – Edinburgh is the perfect festive city and the Christmas markets are a wonderful way to spend an evening!
Royal Yacht Britannia – Visit the Royal yacht, which was the Royal Yacht of the monarchy until 1997, now a top tourist attraction where you can walk through the State apartments, visit the crew quarters and tour all five decks.
Dean Village – Situated only a mile from the very centre, Dean Village captures the tranquillity and charm of the industrial past of the city. Once a village in it’s own right, it is now a very desirable area of Edinburgh and feels like a step back in time.
Arthur’s seat – An ancient volcano overlooking the city, this another stunning viewpoint. It is a bit of a climb but worth every moment. Although in Edinburgh itself, this is a great chance to connect with nature and the landscape.
Real Mary King’s Close – Under the old town on Edinburgh lies a series of closes and alleyways. Have a tour through them to find out about the lives of the residents of those who lived here on a tour around these hidden streets.

Please note that these are just ideas of some of the wonderful ways to spend your time. Tickets to the above attractions are not included, though the Christmas Markets, Dean Village and Royal Mile are all free to explore.

A. No, bed linen is provided and beds will be made.

Q. Do I need to bring a towel?

A. You can either bring your own towel or hire one for a small fee. At the time of writing, this fee is £3, though the hostel decides the pricing, so this is subject to change.

A. Where do I store my belongings?

Q. On arrival and departure days, your belongings will be stored in a luggage room, which will be locked when not being used & supervised by Give it a Go. Once you have access to your bedroom, you will be able to store your luggage in lockers, situated inside the room. These will require you to bring a padlock or buy one from the hostel (£3 as of April 2026). You will only be sharing your room with other Give it a Go students, so some students choose to not use the lockers at all, though this is at your own risk.

A. Does the hostel have hairdryers?

Q. You can borrow a hairdryer from the hostel for a deposit (£5 in cash as of April 2026), which will be retuned when the hairdryer is returned undamaged.

The Edinburgh trip and the day excursion are subject to minimum numbers. If either does not meet minimum requirements, the trip may be unable to go ahead.

You will be given a key card to your room in the hostel, which you will need to return. If you do not return the key card, you will receive a fine of £5.

Officially, there will be no access to the self-catering kitchen during the stay. Typically, the hostel are usually relaxed about small groups or individuals using the kitchen but this cannot be guaranteed.

Dunnottar Castle may be closed at short notice due to poor weather impacting safety. If we cannot visit the castle for this (or any other) reason, we will endeavour to find a similar and suitable alternative. This may be another Castle or Abbey or another tourist attraction. In the event that we’re not able to do this, you will receive a refund for half the cost of the excursion and the visit to St Andrews will remain unimpacted.
